If you see a nesting turtle, do not disturb her. Shining flashlights on her, taking flash photography, or approaching her may frighten her and interrupt nesting. Just watch quietly and enjoy the unforgettable experience! Report all sightings of sea turtles by calling one of the following:
* Local Sea Turtle Protection Organization
* Local Police (911)
* Nearest Aquarium
Keep oceanfront lighting off during nesting and hatching season (May 1 - October 31). Hatchlings are instinctively drawn towards light and can run into danger and away from the ocean due to house and streetlights. Keep draperies or shades drawn - even indoor light sources can confuse hatchlings.
If you find a hatchling avoid handling it. This protects the hatchling from unintended harm through exposure to human disease or accidental injury from handling. It also protects you from bacteria they may carry. If you must pick up a hatchling, use gloves or scoop up the hatchling from below with both hands filling both hands with sand and the hatchling. Put into a clean container with damp sand in the bottom and call one of the above mentioned organizations.
The PISTP is always in need of volunteers in many different capacities. We'd love to have you as part of the team! Contact us for more information on how to get involved.
